Assessments

A student’s final grade for each course is based on assessments and evaluations conducted throughout the course.

Assessments at National E-School are dynamic and come in various forms, including unit tests, essay, discussion forum, presentation, and quizzes. Every course will also require a final evaluation that would contribute directly to the student’s final grade.

Students will be evaluated in a balanced manner with respect to the four categories of achievement charted out in the OSSD Provincial Curriculum Policy:

  • Knowledge and Understanding
  • Thinking and Inquiry
  • Communication
  • Application

Evaluation is based on the level of achievement the student demonstrates in the skills and knowledge covered in a course from three different sources

  • Observations
  • Conversations
  • Student products

Recommendations for Course Success

NES recommends students to focus on producing consistent work since 70% of the evaluation is based on a variety of classroom work, such as in-class demonstrations, presentations, essays, performances and classroom tests & quizzes. 30% of the evaluation is based on a final summative evaluation, which could include a portfolio, essay, examination and/or demonstration. This final evaluation reflects the range and depth of the student’s skills, knowledge and mastery of the course content.

All students will be briefed on every assessment and evaluation procedure at the beginning of every course by their teacher, so they are mentally prepared to plan the effort required to optimise every assessment opportunity.

How to schedule a final evaluation?

Under the section Test Center, there will be a button for students to request the final exam. Once a student clicks the button, the instructor can automatically receive a notification. They will email the students to book a time for the final exam.

Supervision should be required for the final exam, so the parents / guardian / facilitators should sign a consent form beforehand and send it to instructors using their personal email.

On the exam day, the instructor will unblock the final exam on NES platform, students can get access to the final exam 10 minutes before the scheduled time and after completing the exam, they will have 10 minutes to submit it.

Our Policies

All enrolled students will adhere to these policies to ensure a fair and conducive school environment for themselves, teachers and counsellors.

Cheating and Plagiarism

Students must understand that the tests/exams they complete and the assignments they submit for evaluation must be their own work and that cheating and plagiarism will not be condoned. When plagiarism or cheating is suspected, teachers will gather evidence of the plagiarism or cheating.

When a student has not met the School/Teacher’s expectation of academic honesty, a consequence will be applied which will ensure the student understands the vital importance of academic honesty and the gravity of dishonest behavior. The consequence will reflect a continuum of behavioral and academic responses that take into account the grade level of the student; the maturity of the student; the number and frequency of incidents; and the individual circumstances of the student.

Timely Assignment Submission

It is the responsibility of students to provide evidence of their learning within established timelines. The school will implement strategies to ensure students submit evidence of their learning within appropriate and well-communicated timelines.

Response to Late and Missed Assignments

Teachers will:

Conference with the student to ensure the completion of late or missed assignments.

Set up a student contract (oral or written) which includes an appropriate closure date for submission of the missing evidence of learning.

Ensure students and parents/guardians are kept informed of incomplete, late, and non-submitted assignments that are having a significant impact on a student’s reported grade.

Work with students to help them remediate the learning skills and work habits required to meet due dates and provide evidence of their learning.

Teachers may:
Employ other strategies to encourage the responsible meeting of due dates, which include:
  • Facilitating the completion of late or missed work under supervision;
  • Providing an alternate opportunity for a student to demonstrate his/her achievement of the curriculum overall expectations;
  • Deducting marks at a rate of 5% per day for late assignments, up to and including the full value of the assignment.
  • Teachers are expected to assess the on-going effectiveness of interventions and consequences to determine further interventions required to support student success.
